FIRE DANGER IS HIGH

Organizer: The Gila National Forest
Location: The Gila National Forest,Silver City and Surrounding Area,NM,88061

Fire danger is high on the Gila National Forest causing the potential for wildfire activity to increase as summer approaches and conditions become drier. Although the Gila National Forest is not under any fire restrictions at this time, fire managers are monitoring conditions closely and will continue to evaluate the need to go into fire restrictions as fire season progresses. Memorial Day draws many visitors to the forest for the holiday weekend. The public is urged to be extra careful if fire is part of a recreational activity, such as cook-outs and campfires. Embers can be carried by the wind to nearby grass fields and forested areas, resulting in a wildfire that can pose a threat to people and property. Make your outdoor excursion a happy and safe one by following these fire prevention tips: • Clear a campfire site down to bare soil. • Keep all flammable objects away from fire. • Keep your campfire small. • Never leave a campfire unattended even while you sleep.

The RAC committee has nearly $2,005,000 to allocate to projects this year, made available through the Secure Rural Schools and Community Self-Determination Act for fiscal years 2008 and 2009 Title II monies (http://www.fs.fed.us/srs/Title-II.shtml).
